Monts du Forez and Pierre-sur-Haute
To the west of the department, the Monts du Forez culminate at Pierre-sur-Haute, 1,634 metres: high moorlands, herds and jasseries where fourme cheese is made. In winter, the small Chalmazel resort offers a family slope reachable from the plain. In summer, the Hautes Chaumes trails offer long walks, ideal for talking openly.
Loire gorges and Grangent
South of Saint-Étienne, the Loire gorges carve an unexpected relief, overlooked by the ruins of Grangent Castle at the heart of the dam. The Saint-Victor leisure base, boat tours and panoramic trails make a lake to explore together. To the north-west, Lake Villerest offers the same pleasures near Roanne.
Roanne, Charlieu and good tables
Roanne, a town on the Loire, is linked to the Troisgros family, a landmark of French gastronomy. People also come for its canal, quays and bustle. Further north, Charlieu shelters a magnificent Benedictine abbey and its Romanesque capitals. On Lyad, members from the Loire share their favourite dates; it is up to you to find someone to raise a glass with.
